The Glamour of fishnet stockings – from Betty Page to Rocky Horror
The iconic burlesque entertainer Gypsy Rose Lee often wore fishnet stockings during her performances in the 1930’s and 1940’s. Just a few years later, pin-ups Bettie Page and Jayne Mansfield would become as well-known for their striking 1950’s centerfolds as they would for their personal style: lots of fishnets, sheer fabrics and bikini tops. During the 1950’s, Elizabeth Taylor appeared in portraits wearing fishnets with bodysuits and dresses. Interestingly enough, Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot—both actresses who were also trained as ballerinas—also wore fishnet stockings during this decade.Twent years late and punk hit the youth culture fishnets often ripped became iconic and Jean-Paul Gaultier used them for both men and women. The 1970’s saw a new way out musical called The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and here it was cross-dressing men that definately stole the show.
